This was probably one of the craziest things Eva Brooks had ever done. She decided that hey - she deserved a vacation from her thesis on problems in the foster care system and what better way to escape the hectic mess that was her life than by flying out to Smallville, Kansas? Into the farmland and the company of a tall, dark, handsome and amazingly sweet guy. Yeah, this was totally worth the flight.

As the car rolled up on the Kent farm, Eva took a moment to let out a "wow" before paying the driver and getting out, suitcase in hand. She'd drop that at her motel later, right now she was way too excited to go anywhere else. Shifting her suitcase she let it set on the lawn a few feet from the house and went up to knock on the door. Eva knew nothing about horseback riding, so she didn't know how to dress either and as a result ended up in jeans, a pink tank top, and brown sweater over it, feet in brown hightops.

Taking a deep breath she lifted a hand and knocked on the door.

He was a giant, yes, but Eva - like her sister - had an affinity for tall men. And oh yes, Nik was almost a foot taller than her but that would just mean he could give her the weather report from time to time.

"Your house is beautiful. It's so warm and inviting, so much different than my old house on Staten Island." She stopped to read the articles on the far wall and smiled. "Did your dad write these?"

As promised, it doesn't take more than five minutes to finish what he was doing, and wipe his hands on a towel before joining her in front of the headlines. "He did. Dad and his partner have been writing for three decades now."

If it wasn't apparent before: Nik really looks up to his father.

"So, what would you like to do first?"

Eva looked up at Nik and smiled as she saw the admiration in his eyes. "I can see where the journalism minor is coming from. I think it's great you admire your father like that."

After a beat she bit her lip and shrugged. "I'd like to take a look around the farm, if that's okay? I've never been on a farm before..." She said sheepishly, blushing a little.

"He's the best man I know." Nik clears his throat after a moment and turns away, glancing towards the front door. "Let's get you a coat then and head outside. Kansas winters are a little colder than New York ones."

After retrieving one of the extra jackets from the hall closet, there's a good chance he'll help her into it before holding the front door open for her as well.

"I can't believe I packed my coat in my suitcase." Eva slapped a palm to her forehead and groaned - a rare moment of embarrassment. "Smooth, Eva, real smooth."

Blushing, she ducked her head and stepped into the jacket, smiling up at Nik over her shoulder to thank him.

"I might have just chalked it up to you being city folk." Yes, Eva, he's actually teasing. There's a gentle pat against her shoulder before he leads the way outside and glances around. "You've seen our front yard, Dad's truck is missing because he took Mom to Metropolis for the afternoon. There's some sort of flower thing at the convention center. Over there are the cows," he gestures towards the fence and aforementioned bovine behind them.

"And the big, red barn houses our horses."

"Was that a joke, Nik?" She looked up at him, grinning and nudging his arm playfully. "Not bad. We'll turn you into a master comedian yet."

Stepping outside, Eva saw the cows and ran over to the fence, leaning against it - giddy - as she reached a hand out to pet one of the cows. She was such a city girl.

"Could be. Or might be that city slicker imagination going into overdrive." He casually reaches out, intending to ruffle her hair. "They all have names too, but if I stand here listing everyone off, then we'll be here all day and you won't get to do anything."

He peers down at her after a moment, and grins. "Turn you into a cowgirl yet."

Eva giggled a little at the hand in her hair, grinning as she climbed up onto the fence. "I can always learn a few at a time."

"Yeehaw." She lifted a hand from the fence and tipped an imaginary hat Nik's way, yelping as she lost her balance and fell backwards from the fence.

"If you want. The one wearing the daisy chain is Bessie, she's a favorite of my mom's, and the mostly white one next to her is Blanche..."

Nik doesn't get to finish naming the ones by the fence, sadly, as he's suddenly too busy catching Eva in a fireman's carry before she can hit the ground.

"Hey, careful. Are you alright?"

Eva's arms instinctively drape around Nik's neck and she bites her lip, glancing up at him with a completely red face. She's usually more graceful than this, really.

"I think I bruised my ego, but otherwise... I'm peachy. Sorry, I'm-- not generally a klutz. It's more my sister's thing..."

"These fences can be a little slippery when the cold season starts." He glances around and opts for the stack of hay bales near the barn doors, carrying her over to them and away from the slick wood.

Eva gets set down gently, before Nik crouches in front of her to make sure there really aren't any other injuries.

"See, if you bumped your head I could kiss it better from this angle." She joked and brought her green eyes up to meet his, smiling.

"Thanks for carryin' me too. My hero."

Nik ducks his head to conceal the red staining his face, and watches the ground for a minute or two. "... You're welcome, Eva."

Yeah, that's kind of all he's got at the moment.

Eva bites her lower lip through a smile and slides off the bale of hay, dusting off her jeans - designer because she was from New York City - and reaching out to tilt his chin up.

"I'm up here, y'know." She teases softly.

"I know." He glances up again belatedly, then stands there and just watches her for a little while. "Just not sure what to say now. Like I mentioned, I'm a boring homebody most of the time, and I'm not used to talking to pretty city girls."

At least, not outside the classes he takes and the friends of his sisters.

Eva smiled and got onto her tiptoes to give Nik a chaste kiss on the cheek. "Thanks for the compliment. Don't worry about talkin' around me. Just keep showin' me around? I like it here." She smiled reassuringly and slipped an arm around his.

There's another blush, no matter how small, at her kiss, even if it's just a friendly on-the-cheek one, and it takes a few moments for Nik to straighten up and nod.

"Okay. As I said, that big red building is the barn, where we stable our horses, store the hay, and part of it was turned into kind of a loft for Dad when he was a little kid. I've kinda taken it over now. I'll give you a tour there, and then show you mom's garden. Unless you see something else you want to explore?"

Eva smiles fondly as she listens to Nik speak and nods. "That sounds great. So, do you live in the loft on the weekend? Cause it's pretty cold in here and y'know, you'd freeze."

"No, during the school year I have a small apartment in Metropolis. Summers are spent here. I think we've all crashed on the couch in there at one time or another, though." He smiles down at her after a moment. "Let me know when you've recovered from the scare and we'll tour."

"Oh, I recovered around the time you pulled out that impressive fireman's carry. I've stopped swooning though." She smirked. "Well, for the most part." She winked at Nik and began to saunter into the barn to explore.

Eva was a curious and sometimes reckless creature. But her impulsive nature gave her a very lively spirit and hey? It kept her from getting down. She looked around and when she saw the horses she jumped a little. "Holy crap they're huge."

He follows automatically, used to trailing after his sisters to make sure they're alright (nevermind he gets yelled at for it), and reaches a hand out to steady her after the shock.

"General and Buttercup the second are the black and roan over there. The big white fellow is Pegasus." But not the real mythological creature - no wings.

When one of the horses sneezed, she nearly jumped out of her shoes and clung to Nikolas, burying her face in his chest. "Oh my God, it wants to kill me!"It was probably a hilarious sight, the way Eva panicked when the horse sneezed. But in her defense? They didn't have horses in Manhattan. Well, they had the ones in Central Park for buggy rides but... those had muzzle-things on their faces with ropes you could pull on. And most of the time they were too busy chewing on the grass in the Park to notice passersby. They were city horses.
