[livejournal.com profile] justprompts Don't Say Goodbye

"Now a year has passed/Alone I stay inside/And I await the rain." ~One of Those Days, Joshua Radin

Somewhere in the world, it's raining. And tonight, it's New York City.

"I've never been wrong about this, Eva."

The pain and fear are clear in his eyes. And Eva knows what's coming. She knew, deep down, the moment Ford had told her about the vision of his ex, Amy, dying in a fire. The same way his father died. "Do what you need to do, okay? Just don't die on me, or I'll have to find your remains just so I can kick your ass."

Ford laughs, a sound so sweet it brings tears to her eyes. And there are tears in his eyes that threaten to tear her apart. "For the record? I wish I didn't have this vision." He says softly, a pained smile reaching his lips as he reached out to brush some hair from her eyes. "You're the first thing in a long time that has made sense in my life."

"Don't, Ford. Just- just don't. Please don't make this any harder than it already is." She began to cry, pulling away from him and shaking her head. Some stray droplets from her hair splattered against his face, only adding to the irony of the rain they stood under while this took place. The same rain that fell upon them when they first kissed.

"Nothing's going to be harder than leaving you here and now." He replied, voice low and sullen.

"I can't do this. I- I can't..." Eva felt her heart shatter for the first time in her life and now she began to understand how it felt for Anna when Matteo ended their relationship. It was too much to take, and Eva couldn't be here. Not now. So she turned and ran. For the first time in her life, she ran away. Went against every bone in her body that told her to stay and hear him out. She could hear him calling after her, but she didn't stop. If she stopped she would fall, and she wouldn't be able to pick herself back up.

The rain beat down against her bedroom window incessantly, taunting her and throwing all the pain back in her face. The moon had claimed the Manhattan skyline and still Eva sat in her bed, hugging her knees with tear-stained cheeks from hours of crying.

"Eva?" There was a knock at her door and she sniffled, before lifting her head. The door swung open and revealed her brother Ryan, who awkwardly offered her a box of tissues and some hot chocolate. He sat beside her on the bed and pulled her into a protective embrace. He could be temperamental when he wanted to be, but his rage and spite toward Ford would wait until later. Eva didn't need that right now. She needed her big protective older brother to comfort her until Anna was well enough after the attack from Phelps to take over as the big sister/maternal figure/free shrink all rolled into one loving package.

"I think I loved him." She rasps and begins to cry into Ryan's shoulder, broken and defeated with nothing left to keep her from falling apart.

"He's asking for you, Eva. I'll make him leave. Just say the word." He mutters into her hair and gives her a squeeze. She just nods, and Ryan leaves - hesitantly - sending Ford into her room and closing the door behind them.

"I couldn't just leave." The sight of her crying breaks his heart, and Ford moved in to sit beside Eva on her bed and hold her tightly. "If you want me to stay, tell me. Ask me to stay, Eva."

"I can't." There's a tired finality in those two little words, and they both know that if he stayed, it would destroy them both. "Promise you'll come back when it's over?"

Ford met her eyes, smiling sadly. I promise I'll try. "I promise." He sighs heavily, before kissing her forehead lovingly and laying her back on the bed. She's tired, and so is he. They spent hours lying there in bed, Ford holding Eva tight as they talked about everything and nothing, soaking up the finality that was in this moment. Both of them knew deep down that this was it. He wasn't coming back to her and she would have to learn to move on. Neither of them wanted to believe it, god they didn't want to acknowledge that possibility. But this wasn't a fairytale romance, there was no happy ending. There was only the harsh reality that this wasn't meant to be.

They slept like that - clinging to each other, entwined and desperate for one last moment of peace before the heartbreak truly settled in. In the morning, Eva walked him to the door and got on her tiptoes to kiss him goodbye. The kiss was rather brief, but for the torn lovers it was a lifetime. "Goodbye, Ford."

Ford kissed her forehead, brushing her hair out of her eyes one final time before choking out his own goodbye. The door closed behind him and that was it. Time stopped in that moment and she collapsed in on herself, lost and heartbroken.

Somewhere in the world, it's raining. And tonight, five months later, it's New York City.
